Shortly before the 2006 Open Golf Championship at Hoylake, Network Rail were refurbishing the station and its associated structures. Construction Techniques Limited were the specialist working for the framework contractor.
The concrete footbridge from the station, over the railway towards the golf course, was suffering from localised concrete spalling over corroding reinforcing steel. This was due to progressive carbonation and deterioration which had to be halted and future protection provided, all as part of the overall station refurbishment programme. Construction Techniques decided to use a full Sika Concrete repair and protection system provided by their specialist materials suppliers NCC in Chorley. This involved using specialist access to the structure with protection for passing trains that had to maintain a normal timetable throughout.
Firstly the concrete was thoroughly cleaned, then Sika MonoTop repair and levelling mortars were applied. Then Sikagard Elastocolour coating was used overall, to provide the long term crack bridging protection and anti carbonation resistance.
